Candle Holder Safety: How to Display a 3D-Printed Candle Holder

Candle holders are some of our most popular designs, especially around Halloween. Each one is shaped around a standard 3-wick jar candle, so the candle sits inside and lights the design from within. Because an open flame is involved, a few simple habits keep your holder looking great and your home safe.

Start with the right candle

Use a candle that comes in its own glass jar, sized like a standard 3-wick candle. The jar keeps melted wax contained and puts a layer of glass between the flame and the print. Candles are not included with our holders, so you can use a scent you already love. Avoid loose pillar candles or tapers inside a printed holder.

Keep the flame low and the wick short

  • Trim wicks to about a quarter inch before each burn. Long wicks make tall, smoky flames.
  • Keep the flame well below the top edge of the printed holder.
  • If the flame gets large or flickers wildly, blow it out, let it cool, and trim the wick before relighting.
  • Stop burning when only a small layer of wax is left in the jar, since the glass gets hotter as the candle burns down.

Pick a safe spot

Set the holder on a stable, flat, heat-safe surface. Keep it away from curtains, paper decorations, and anything else that can catch fire, and out of reach of kids and pets. Avoid drafty spots near fans, open windows, or vents, since moving air makes flames jump. Never place a holder where it could be knocked over, like the edge of a crowded party table.

Never leave it unattended

This is the most important rule. Blow out the candle whenever you leave the room or go to sleep. A 3D print is plastic, and it can soften or deform from too much heat, so limit burn times and let everything cool completely before touching or moving the holder.

When to choose a flameless candle

For long display sessions, porches, kids' rooms, or all-night Halloween displays, a flameless LED candle is the best choice. It gives the same glow through the design with no heat at all, so your holder stays in perfect shape for years. Glow-in-the-dark versions also shine on their own after a few minutes under a lamp or sunlight, with no candle needed.

Cleaning and care

Dust your holder with a soft, dry cloth or a small brush for detailed areas. Keep it out of the dishwasher and away from hot cars or direct high heat. If wax drips onto the print, let it harden and gently lift it off rather than scraping.
